Nintendo is set to release a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 console on November 5, 2026. This launch comes just one day before the arrival of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto VI, positioning two major industry titles for release in the same week. The new version of the classic adventure marks a significant milestone for the franchise, arriving 28 years after the original debuted on the Nintendo 64 in 1998.
The remake introduces a more realistic visual style while retaining the core spirit of the original game. Developers have noted that the art direction was inspired by puppet shows and practical effects films. Art director Aya Shida explained that these mediums do not reproduce reality exactly but create a convincing sense that characters exist within their fantasy worlds. She stated that this approach overlaps with the distinctive nostalgia evoked by the 1998 release.
Modern gameplay enhancements have been implemented to improve accessibility for new players. The game now includes a dedicated jump button and a sprinting mechanic, which were not present in the original. Additionally, a feature called Threads of Time allows players to track their progress easily. The title also integrates with the Nintendo Switch app, enabling players to view game maps and other information on their smartphones. Full voice acting has been added to the experience.
Despite these modern additions, Nintendo has aimed to preserve the classic feel of the original. In a recent interview, developers mentioned their desire to keep the Roll Attack mechanic, which allows players to forward roll across Hyrule Field. While players can now dash, the option to use the roll attack remains available for those who prefer the traditional method. Longtime producer Eiji Aonuma described the project as a faithful interpretation using modern technologies.
The Ocarina of Time remake is the first major title in the franchise to be exclusive to the Switch 2 hardware. It follows a series of recent releases, including Echoes of Wisdom in 2024 and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment in November of the previous year. The game represents a significant step for Nintendo as it continues to reengineer its library of classic titles for the newer console generation.
Physical copies of the game are currently available for purchase at retailers such as Amazon and Walmart. Buyers can find a $10 discount on the physical edition until the official launch date. After November 5, the physical version is expected to increase from $59.99 to $69.99, while the digital version will remain at $59.99.
To celebrate the launch, Nintendo has introduced a special edition of the Switch 2 console and a matching Pro Controller. These items feature Triforce imagery to honor the legacy of the game. The release date was officially confirmed during a stream celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise, which also provided a clearer look at how the company is approaching the remake of one of its most influential games.
Nintendo first teased the remake in June 2026 with a brief trailer. Since then, the company has released a developer Q&A detailing the changes made to the gameplay and visuals. The game is being positioned as a way to welcome new players who may have first encountered the series through modern titles like Breath of the Wild, while still offering a familiar experience for long-time fans.
A third-party accessory maker, Hori, has also released an electronic Ocarina of Time for $49.99. This device allows players to play pre-programmed songs from the games or input their own melodies via buttons. It can also be used with the sound recognition feature in the remake or connected to headphones for private listening.
Based on early hands-on previews, the remake is described as having fantastic graphics and modernized controls that are simpler to pick up for experienced action game players. The title aims to address the most frustrating aspects of the original while maintaining its timeless appeal. With its launch imminent, the game is expected to join a crowded field of high-profile releases in the upcoming days.
