Air traffic controllers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport are no longer handling paper strips to track planes. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that staff began using electronic flight strips this week. This change replaces a method that has defined airport operations for decades.

The new system provides real-time flight data directly to controllers. Instead of writing updates on physical slips, operators now modify digital records while keeping their eyes on the sky. An FAA representative noted that the technology reduces the need for controllers to look down during updates. This allows them to focus more attention on active aircraft and immediate operational needs.

The digital platform also sends automatic alerts for operational changes. Controllers receive immediate notifications about events such as runway closures. The system is designed to help staff respond more quickly to shifting weather patterns and varying traffic levels. By streamlining these updates, the agency aims to improve coordination among the different groups involved in daily airport management.

Atlanta is the 26th airport in the network to adopt this electronic tracking method. The FAA states the upgrade is part of a wider effort to modernize air traffic control operations. The goal is to maintain safety standards at one of the nation's busiest aviation hubs. The transition allows controllers to identify potential problems faster without the physical burden of sorting through paper documents.
