A dog and a cat that lost legs to injury were adopted as a pair by a Maryland couple this year.

Blueberry, a one-year-old dog, and Meadow, a ten-month-old cat, met at Last Chance Animal Rescue in Waldorf, Maryland. Both animals had arrived with wounds to their limbs that required surgical amputations. Laurie Jenkins, the rescue’s assistant director, confirmed that both pets underwent these procedures before meeting each other.

Staff members first encountered the animals during their lunch breaks. Lauren Webb, the hospital manager, recalled that she received a call about Blueberry on Christmas Eve. The dog had been found on the street in poor condition. Webb noted that staff laid a blanket on the floor for the animals to rest. When Blueberry emerged and Meadow laid on top of her, they remained together for the rest of their stay. Jenkins described the moment as a bonding event that led to the decision to keep them paired for adoption.

Rachel Clarke and her partner Kevin adopted the pair after seeing a Facebook post from the rescue. Clarke already owned a three-legged cat in her home. She stated that the couple decided to apply for the animals despite the attention the post had received. Clarke described the dynamic at home, noting that the animals sleep together and support each other when they stumble.

The adoption process followed a specific timeline of care. Blueberry was admitted to the hospital in December, while Meadow was transferred from a West Virginia shelter a month later. The two met roughly another month after Meadow’s arrival. Clarke mentioned that the animals’ resilience stood out to her, particularly after hearing about their medical challenges. Webb confirmed that the rescue viewed the Clarke household as an ideal environment for the pair.
