A U.S. Marshals Service tactical team rescued a 10-year-old girl on Wednesday afternoon after she was found tied up in a closet inside a home in Oregon City, Oregon. The child had been taken from her apartment in Canby early that morning, and the arrest of her suspected abductor concluded a tense six-hour search.
Investigators say a man entered the apartment at 1:39 a.m., injured a 12-year-old child, and abducted the younger girl. The 12-year-old was rushed to the hospital and remained under treatment as of Wednesday afternoon. The parents of the two children are cooperating with police.
Vince Edgar Chavez attempted to escape through the rear of the residence where the girl was held. Marshals intercepted him before he could get far. The agency confirmed that Chavez was the individual arrested in connection with the kidnapping.
Local residents questioned why an Amber Alert was not activated immediately after the abduction. The Canby Police Department stated that the department had not yet gathered the specific information required to issue such an alert at the time the girl was taken.
Carus Elementary, the school where the 10-year-old is a student, increased its police presence during Wednesday's afternoon dismissal. The district cited an abundance of caution for the added security. In a statement, the district said its hearts are with the child and her family, and that staff are ready to support students in whatever ways they can.
