Sonia Friedman Productions, StudioCanal, and Eliza Lumley Productions announced that Paddington: The Musical will remain in the West End until at least June 25, 2028. The extension follows a surge in ticket demand that organizers described as unprecedented. The production has become the most awarded musical in recent history after securing seven Olivier Awards earlier this year.
The show tied the record for the most wins by a single musical production. The accolades included best new musical, best director for Luke Sheppard, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress. These awards solidified the production’s critical standing immediately after its premiere. The musical is based on Michael Bond’s novel A Bear Called Paddington and the subsequent film franchise.
Tom Fletcher of the band McFly wrote the music and lyrics, while Jessica Swale authored the book. The story follows a lost bear from Peru who arrives in London and finds a home with the Brown family in Windsor Gardens. A villain named Lady Sloane targets the bear, prompting the family to embark on a rescue mission.
The London cast has undergone changes as the run continues. Sonny Monaghan handles the bear’s voice and remote puppetry, while Abbie Purvis and Hassan Taj perform on stage. Samantha Bingley joins the cast as Lady Sloane. Other new additions include Alex Crandon as Hank the Pigeon, Linzi Hateley as Mrs Bird, Cassidy Janson as Millicent Clyde, and Sandra Marvin as Tanya.
Haydn Oakley plays Mr Brown and Charlotte Wakefield plays Mrs Brown. Marc Pickering appears as Mr Curry. Tarinn Callender and Teddy Kempner are reprising their roles as Grant and Mr Gruber, respectively. The production team continues to manage the dual performance style that blends puppetry with live actors.
The show is scheduled to open on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in March 2027. Following the London and New York runs, a production will open at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney in September 2027. These international openings mark the next phase for the franchise after its successful run in the West End.
The extension allows the production to maintain its current momentum through the next two years. The team will continue to operate in London while preparing the Broadway and Sydney versions. The 2028 date for the London closing is the earliest confirmed endpoint for the current engagement.
