Film audiences in Los Angeles heard a specific account of how Patrick Stewart’s involvement prevented the cancellation of the movie Green Room. Director Jeremy Saulnier shared these details at a screening for the film’s 10th anniversary on Friday. The event took place one day after Stewart’s death at age 86.
Saulnier stated that production was on the verge of shutting down because the lead role of Darcy Banker remained unfilled. He described the situation as being at a point of no return while building sets. Saulnier said, 'We're fucked, and we were close to shutting down.' He added that Stewart expressed interest in the project out of the blue.
The director recalled being on the phone with Stewart roughly one week after the initial expression of interest. Saulnier noted that he had previously thought the production might have to break down its sets and cease operations. Instead, Stewart agreed to the part. Saulnier said the movie was instantly greenlit after that confirmation.
Saulnier described Stewart as a 'fucking sweetheart' and a 'true gentleman' who led the cast with kindness. He shared an anecdote where Stewart asked permission to add a single line to a scene. The actor wanted to say the word 'fuck' while the camera moved through a specific area. Saulnier granted the request and noted that the exchange showed Stewart was aligned with the film’s aesthetic and intentions.
The director credited Stewart with allowing him to continue making movies. Saulnier said, 'Patrick Stewart is why I still can make movies.' He characterized the actor’s decision as a leap that made Green Room a reality. The tribute was posted on the Film Updates X account.
Kelly Bush Novak, Stewart’s longtime spokesperson, announced his death on Wednesday. Novak stated that Stewart passed away at his home in Los Angeles. She described his final period as a 'brief and poignant journey' involving Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
Tributes from Hollywood figures followed the announcement. Ian McKellen, Kevin Feige, and William Shatner were among those who paid homage. Hugh Jackman, Minnie Driver, and Halle Berry also shared their remembrances for the actor known for his roles in Star Trek and the X-Men franchise.
