Minnesota’s 6-0 start is intact, but the team’s 210-yard passing attack could not sustain a lead against the NFL’s worst defense.

The Minnesota Vikings lost their first game of the season on Sunday, Nov. 1, falling 19-15 to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The defeat followed a 6-0 start that relied heavily on a dominant defense. With the game on the line in the final minutes, the Vikings’ offense failed to convert a crucial possession, leading to a punt that ended their season’s perfect record.

Quarterback Kyler Murray struggled against the Lions, who entered the contest as the NFL’s worst defense by total yards allowed per game. Murray completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His performance included a late scoring drive that temporarily put the Vikings ahead, but he also threw an incomplete pass to Jordan Addison on third down in the closing moments. Coach Kevin O’Connell chose to punt rather than attempt a fourth-down conversion, a decision that sealed the loss.

The offensive line and skill players had difficulty gaining yardage against Detroit’s defense. The Vikings’ opening drive stalled, resulting in a 57-yard field goal attempt by Will Reichard that missed wide right. The team’s first score came on a play-action pass to T.J. Hockenson, followed by a handoff to Aaron Jones and a catch by Justin Jefferson in the end zone to make the score 7-3.

The Lions’ defense held Minnesota at bay until the second half. Detroit’s running back Jahmyr Gibbs broke free for a long run, extending the lead to 12-7 after a failed two-point conversion. Murray responded with a 55-yard pass to Addison and a touchdown to Hockenson, capping the drive with a two-point conversion to put the Vikings up 15-12. The lead did not last.

Detroit’s offense moved down the field to take a 19-15 lead in the fourth quarter. The Lions’ defense prevented a final Viking score, and the game ended with the Minnesota team holding the ball for the last time. The loss marks the first blemish on a season that began with six consecutive victories. The Vikings will look to bounce back in their next scheduled game.

The performance raised questions about the consistency of the passing attack. While the defense remains a top-tier unit, the offense has shown signs of strain in recent matchups. The Lions’ field goal by Jake Bates was the decisive scoring play in the final stretch, as the clock ran out on the Vikings’ last drive. The result leaves the Vikings at 6-1 on the season.
