$550 billion in AI-related debt has been issued in various forms so far this year. The figure, cited by Pimco CEO Emmanuel Roman on Tuesday, underscores the rapid expansion of borrowing in the artificial intelligence sector.

The sheer volume of new issuance is creating concentration risks for debt investors. Blackstone President Jon Gray, speaking at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit, argued that the scale of capital required for AI infrastructure is pushing lenders into a position of limited upside. Unlike shareholders, whose returns grow with company performance, lenders are largely confined to interest and principal repayments. Gray noted that this dynamic is evident both across the sector and at individual companies.

Roman warned that the current trajectory could overwhelm market capacity. He cited an estimate from General Atlantic CEO Bill Ford that AI-related capital spending could reach approximately $10 trillion over the next five years. Even when combining equity and debt financing, Roman described the total requirement as "gigantic" compared to the global corporate bond market, which stands at roughly $20 trillion. He stated, "At some point in time, it’s going to be too much."

A report from Goldman Sachs released Monday provides a specific breakdown of infrastructure needs. The bank estimated that global data center demand will require about $8.5 trillion in capital spending over the next five years. Gray said the financing mix will need to include public markets, banks, and private capital. He observed that companies are increasingly turning to structured transactions to limit their direct debt loads, while cash generated by hyperscalers will also fund a portion of the spending.

"The creativity is needed because the scale of capital is enormous," Gray said. He emphasized that demand for computing power is running well ahead of supply. Spending on AI models across Blackstone’s portfolio companies has risen twenty-fold over the past year. Businesses are seeing financial benefits from applications such as coding, customer engagement, and content creation.

Securing the physical components of this expansion remains a challenge. Gray said that obtaining sites, permits, chips, power, and capital has become more difficult. Despite these hurdles, he maintained a bullish outlook on the sector's growth trajectory.
