The Greer Soup Kitchen in South Carolina received a $2,000 check on Thursday.
The donation came from the FOX Carolina Surprise Squad and United Community. The kitchen uses the funds to prepare meals for the upcoming holiday season. Executive Director Martha Bennett stated that current demand for food assistance is at a high level.
The kitchen operates every day of the year. It serves more than 100 people daily, with capacity extending to 150 individuals. Many of those served are homeless. The organization has no government or state funding. It relies entirely on contributions from families, churches, and local businesses in Greer and the Upstate region. Bennett reported that recent donation levels have decreased.
Bennett has led the kitchen for nearly 18 years. She noted that the facility has never turned a person away, though resources have been tight at times. "It’s been close at times, but God just brings it in the door," Bennett said. "You can’t out-give him. So that’s what we rely on."
Bennett initially believed the arrival of the Surprise Squad and United Community was a standard news interview. When the check was presented, she expressed immediate gratitude. "This will feed 2,000 people. Really," Bennett said. The gift covers the cost of meals for the Thanksgiving and Christmas periods.
Michelle Seaver from United Community described the visit as a personal connection to the community. She said the team was inspired by Bennett’s work and wanted to support the kitchen during a critical time. "It is just an amazing place to be and to be a part of," Seaver said.
Bennett emphasized that the kitchen provides more than just food. The goal is to offer a safe environment for one hour. "If we can just love on them for an hour. If they’re safe for an hour, that’s our goal," Bennett said.
