A 28-year-old woman suffered multiple stab wounds to the neck while jogging in Brooklyn on Friday night. New York City police confirmed the attack occurred around 8 p.m. near Shore Parkway and Bay 17th Street in the Bath Beach neighborhood. The victim was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition. An NYPD spokesperson confirmed on Saturday that she remained alive.
Police stated the woman was jogging eastbound along the Shore Parkway Greenway when she was struck. The New York Post reported that she had been training for the New York City Marathon scheduled for Sunday. New York Road Runners, the group that organizes the event, said in a statement that they were sad to hear of the attack. The organization noted that its records show the woman had previously participated in its races. NYRR could not confirm if she planned to run in Sunday's race.
Investigators have not released the victim's identity. They have also not identified a suspect. It was not immediately clear what led up to the incident or whether the victim knew her attacker. The attack took place along a section of the waterfront path that overlooks Gravesend Bay. This area offers views of Staten Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
Police are asking the public for help with the ongoing investigation. Residents with information are asked to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit a tip through the department's website. All tips are confidential.
