Mountain Brook High School’s volleyball program concluded its season with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Spanish Fort during the Class 5A state semifinals at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Wednesday. The loss capped a campaign in which the Spartans recorded a 43-7 overall record.

Spanish Fort, the two-time defending state champion, won the final three sets of the match. The score progression was 25-18, 25-23, 19-25, and 25-17. Mountain Brook had previously lost to Spanish Fort 3-0 in the season opener on Aug. 20. In this rematch, the Spartans contested the second set closely, losing by only two points, and took the third set 25-19.

Individual statistics from the semifinal match included 12 kills and three blocks from Adele Moffatt. Setter Sullivan Todd contributed 20 assists and three kills, while Grace Ann Lloyd recorded 12 kills. The team’s performance in the final game reflected the depth shown throughout the tournament.

The Spartans advanced to the semifinals after securing a 3-0 victory over Pike Road in the quarterfinal round earlier that day. The set scores against Pike Road were 25-18, 25-15, and 25-15. Moffatt led the team with 13 kills in that match. Lucy Comer added 10 kills and six digs, while Todd recorded 22 assists and four kills. Mae Mae King contributed four kills and two blocks.

Mountain Brook entered the state tournament as the No. 2 seed from the North region. The team’s path to the semifinals included a Class 5A, Area 10 title and a sub-regional victory over St. Clair County. The Spartans also reached the North Super Regional final, where they defeated East Limestone 3-0 and Southside 3-1 before falling to Jasper 3-0.

The state tournament continues at Bill Harris Arena on Thursday. Spanish Fort faces Jasper in the Class 5A championship match, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The winner will claim the state title, while Mountain Brook finishes its season with 43 wins and seven losses.
