About 20 U.S. warships are converging on the Middle East ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, with an additional aircraft carrier strike group and a Marine Expeditionary Unit set to join them in November, The Wall Street Journal reported on October 27. Some vessels could rotate out of the region.

The buildup includes a Patriot air and missile defense system moving from Texas to the Middle East. The package comprises radar equipment, an engagement control station, missile launchers, and interceptor missiles. The U.S. military is also replenishing munitions stockpiles, preparing bomber aircraft and fighter jets for possible strikes, and moving troops from bases officials considered vulnerable to Iranian attacks.

Washington has warned several Gulf Arab countries to prepare for a short, intense military campaign against Iran after the midterms, according to people briefed on those conversations. An earlier U.S. decision placed a third aircraft carrier and additional Marines in the region; a U.S. official said on October 1 that the USS Theodore Roosevelt and Marine personnel were being sent to expand Washington's military options.

President Donald Trump is weighing further military action against Iran. The Journal reported he has not made a final decision on another campaign, and that he is leaning toward strikes against Iranian infrastructure and nuclear facilities, though a negotiated agreement remains possible.

Iran has threatened to broaden its retaliation if the U.S. and Israel resume attacks, including strikes on energy infrastructure, airports, and other civilian facilities across the Persian Gulf. A U.S. official confirmed on October 24 that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had received an intelligence memorandum stating that Iranian efforts to target Americans had intensified.

Two diplomatic sources said on October 15 that Tehran had told Hezbollah to raise its readiness ahead of possible further U.S. military action. The timing, scope, and final decision on any renewed campaign remain unsettled.
