Paramount Primal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster announced on Tuesday that Ben Wheatley will direct the horror film Molepeople. The change comes after Rob Savage stepped down from the project due to scheduling conflicts.
LaKeith Stanfield, who was previously cast as the lead, is also leaving the production. Savage remains attached to the movie as an executive producer alongside Ryan Turek, Tracy Rosenblum, and screenwriter Nathan Elston.
The film was introduced to the public during a Blumhouse Atomic Monster presentation at New York Comic-Con earlier this month. The story centers on a man who enters abandoned tunnels beneath New York City and discovers a twisted society living below the streets.
Wheatley, who directed the 2026 action thriller Normal, joins the project to replace Savage. His career includes the 2011 film Kill List, which received six British Independent Film Award nominations, and the 2024 Warner Bros. release Meg 2: The Trench.
Jason Blum, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules, and James Harris serve as producers on the picture. Paramount will handle worldwide distribution for the release.
The film is currently scheduled for a theatrical debut on August 27, 2027.
