The Homewood City Council granted final zoning approval on Oct. 26 to a new development called The Woods, a mini-golf and entertainment complex planned for West Homewood. The project will occupy a one-acre lot at 504 Scott St., situated between Oxmoor Boulevard and Oxmoor Street.
Developer Owen Ferguson, 30, stated that the venue is designed to fill a gap in recreational options for residents living west of Edgewood. He noted that the area historically offered limited activities compared to downtown Homewood, which features shopping and restaurants. The new site will feature an 18-hole putting green and a 2,783-square-foot building that houses a full-service bar and grill. Outside, a large turf field will be anchored by a video wall for events.
Ferguson emphasized that the business is not solely a golf course. He described plans for party cabanas, vendor markets, live music, and comedy performances. The partnership aims to host corporate events, fundraising nights, and sports leagues for all ages. The group intends to operate until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights while adhering to local noise ordinances.
The development team includes Ferguson, Jack Dorough, Tommy Donaldson, Riley Meeks, and Lee Pantazis. Most are Homewood natives who grew up in the area. Dorough, who has worked for Pratt Industries in Nashville for three and a half years, said the project evolved from regular calls into a full-time commitment. He described the effort as a shared dream to see the neighborhood grow.
Ferguson acknowledged social media complaints labeling the venture a potential disturbance. He pointed to existing infrastructure as a solution to parking concerns, noting a new public lot built on the site of a former Waffle House restaurant. The developers will provide 22 private parking spaces. Ferguson stated that the proximity of the public lot was a major factor in their decision to proceed.
The group plans to demolish two existing buildings on the property to make way for the new structures. Ferguson said he has been meeting with neighboring residents and business owners to introduce the project. Adjacent properties include a Public Storage facility, American Flag Co., The Pennington Group, Oxmoor Automotive, and Homewood Animal Hospital.
Ferguson left his position as a property broker with Amwins after seven years to pursue the venture full-time. He described the decision as difficult but necessary to pursue his goal of establishing a local business. The team plans to begin construction after the demolition phase is complete.
