Providence basketball has secured a top-tier interior piece for its upcoming class, anchoring the program's 2027 recruiting efforts with a high-profile signing. Lewis Uvwo, the No. 7 overall prospect in the 247Sports rankings, committed to the Friars on Wednesday. He made his decision public on CBS Sports HQ, selecting Providence over offers from Kentucky, Baylor, and Cal.
The commitment represents a substantial win for Bryan Hodgson, who is beginning his first season as head coach. Uvwo is considered the best big man in the 2027 cycle and is the highest-ranked center. He plays for Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Last month, he completed official visits to the four schools that held him in consideration. This signing places him in rare company for the Friars; he is only the third five-star recruit in the program's history during the 247Sports era, joining Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn from the 2012 class.
Uvwo cited the program's culture and the coaching staff's vision as primary factors in his choice. In an interview with 247Sports, he stated that the staff genuinely believed in him as a person, not just a basketball player. He described the program's history as a foundation with "room to create more history and go to heights never experienced at the school." He also praised Hodgson's track record, noting that the coach "separated himself through his craft" and possesses a clear vision for building a successful team.
Scouting analysts view Uvwo as a defensive asset with exceptional physical tools. Adam Finklestein, the Director of Scouting for 247Sports, labels Uvwo an "elite defensive prospect." The player stands 6-foot-10, weighs 225 pounds, and possesses a wingspan of nearly 7-foot-6. Finklestein notes that Uvwo moves with explosive athleticism, capable of quick direction changes and secondary jumps despite his size. The analyst expects Uvwo to add muscle while maintaining his current level of explosiveness and high energy on the court.
The addition of Uvwo strengthens Providence's position as a national contender within the Big East Conference. The program's recruiting success aligns with its financial standing in the sport. Providence falls into Tier 4 of the budget rankings, which covers an annual operating budget between $12.1 million and $15 million. This tier includes other Big East schools such as Georgetown, Creighton, Villanova, and Marquette, as well as major programs like UCLA, Ohio State, and Alabama.
The Friars will integrate Uvwo into their roster as they prepare for the 2026-27 season. Hodgson will have his first true freshman impact from the 2027 class while managing current roster depth. The program continues to build its identity under new leadership, leveraging its established recruiting infrastructure to attract top talent from across the country.
