Baltimore Ravens fans will see an unfamiliar face under center when their team hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano is set to start the Week 9 opener, a change that will determine the team's offensive rhythm for the remainder of the season.
The decision follows a series of injuries that have stripped the Ravens of their primary options at quarterback. Lamar Jackson suffered a right thumb injury on the first play of the Week 8 game against the Buffalo Bills, requiring surgery. His backup, Tyler Huntley, was also removed from that contest due to a turf toe injury. Coach Jesse Minter confirmed that both players are expected to be placed on injured reserve before Thursday's matchup.
Fagnano, 25, had to step in during the loss to Buffalo after the initial injuries. In that game, he completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and threw an interception. He also lost a fumble. Minter described the opportunity as one the team is "fired up about," noting the excitement of playing in front of home supporters against a strong opponent.
The rookie's path to the roster was unconventional. Fagnano went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft out of the University of Connecticut. He beat out fellow undrafted recruit Diego Pavia to secure a spot on the 53-man roster during the summer. Minter stated that Fagnano earned his place by taking advantage of opportunities when other quarterbacks were unavailable.
In the preseason, Fagnano completed 56 of 75 passes for 509 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. His performance in the limited games provided a sample size for the coaching staff. Minter noted that the rookie did not receive many reps in organized team activities but began to gain experience 10 days before the first preseason game when injuries opened the door.
Despite the promotion, Fagnano may not be fully healthy. He appeared to injure his right ankle during the Week 8 loss but stayed in the game. During Tuesday's practice, he was seen wearing a large brace on that ankle. When asked about his condition, Fagnano said it felt "good," adding that bumps and bruises are part of the physical nature of the sport.
Kicker Tyler Loop is also expected to be placed on injured reserve. With Jackson and Huntley out for an extended period, Fagnano's start against Jacksonville likely signals a new normal for the Baltimore offense.
