A new two-story Department of Veterans Affairs clinic will replace the current Sarasota facility at 2390 Lakewood Ranch Boulevard.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced that the project is currently in the design phase. The agency recently awarded a lease for the construction of the replacement building. Construction is projected to begin in late 2027.
The new facility will span 109,688 square feet. The VA stated that the space will support the Patient Aligned Care Team model, which focuses on coordinated and patient-centered treatment. Services at the clinic will include mental health, audiology, optometry, dental care, telehealth, and expanded primary care capacity. The department expects the site to serve more than 120,000 veterans annually.
Cullinan JV LLC serves as the lessor for the project. This joint venture includes Cullinan Properties, Ltd., and Construction Managers, Inc., a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business. David J. VanMeter, Director of Bay Pines VA Medical Center, said the future clinic represents a commitment to providing veterans the care they deserve.
Local veterans and their families expressed hope that the new location will reduce travel burdens. Mary Kirby, who lives in Venice, said her husband visits VA clinics across the region approximately eight times a year. She noted that a closer facility could reduce the need for long drives to St. Petersburg, where her husband attends a weekly cancer support group.
Rick Koenig, a retired VA employee with 30 years of military service, said the new facility will offer more services than are currently available in Sarasota and Bradenton. He compared the planned clinic to the facility in Cape Coral, describing it as a small hospital.
The project remains in the design stage. The VA has set the start of construction for late 2027.
