The Windsor International Film Festival is operating under a new $303,800 provincial funding package that supports its 2026 edition. The money arrives through six separate programs and covers costs for film programming, venue rentals, and technical equipment.
Ontario officials announced the allocation on Friday at the Capitol Theatre. The funding comes from the ministries of Tourism, Culture and Gaming; Seniors and Accessibility; and Francophone Affairs. The Ontario Trillium Foundation and Ontario Creates also contribute to the total sum.
The largest portion of the grant, $125,000, comes from the Experience Ontario program. This funds the core operations of the festival, including marketing and the physical setup for screenings. An additional $40,000 from the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund supports special events. These include the world premiere of Draw Me A Bridge and the Canadian premiere of As Far Back As I Can Remember..The Story of Goodfellas.
Accessibility improvements receive $61,300 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This amount pays for features that assist patrons with hearing and vision impairments at select showings. Another $40,000 is allocated specifically for Francophone programming.
The festival also receives $25,000 to support Francophone and bilingual seniors, aiming to reduce social isolation in the community. A final grant of $12,500 goes toward professional development for emerging and mid-career filmmakers.
Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie stated that the festival acts as a key economic driver for the region. He noted that visitors spend money at local restaurants and shops in downtown Windsor. Vincent Georgie, the festival’s executive director and chief programmer, described the provincial support as fundamental to the organization’s success. He said the funds allow the team to expand its reach and attract larger audiences.
The 2026 festival began on Thursday, October 29, and will continue through November 8. Tickets and festival passes are currently available for purchase through the organization's website.
