Residents of Milwaukee will have the day off work and school to celebrate the local baseball team's first championship in 58 years. The Milwaukee Public Schools district canceled classes for Friday, allowing families to join the victory parade that will wind through downtown streets.
The Brewers secured the World Series title on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The win ended the series in five games and capped a season that delivered a trophy to a small-market franchise for the first time since 1968. Fans in the stands at the Tampa Bay Rays' stadium cheered during the final out, while thousands more gathered in Milwaukee to watch the game live.
The celebration will continue on Friday with a public march through the city center. The route ends at Henry Maier Festival Park, a venue located near the shore of Lake Michigan. A fan fest is scheduled for the park following the parade. Local police plan to deploy a large presence to manage the expected crowds and control traffic flow along the route.
Enthusiasm for the event began early in the week. One fan reported standing in a line of 34,000 people at 8 a.m. on Wednesday to secure a ticket for the post-game rally at American Family Insurance Amphitheater. The amphitheater event preceded the citywide march planned for the weekend.
Local institutions have also acknowledged the milestone. Michael Maxwell, the presiding judge in Waukesha County, issued a ruling on Thursday. He stated that Brewers gear is formally considered compliant with professional decorum for courtroom staff, litigants, and attorneys. This allowance remains in effect until the conclusion of the victory parade.
