A senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology has built a global distribution network for youth sports equipment. Bera Gumruk has sent 3,000 pieces of gear to eight countries since launching Soccer-4-All. The inventory includes cleats, jerseys, shin guards, socks, and balls. These items now support 1,000 young athletes.
The program targets underserved communities in Mexico, Haiti, Argentina, Nigeria, Morocco, Uganda, Tanzania, and Malaysia. Gumruk started the initiative after learning his father could not afford soccer equipment during his childhood in Turkey. He noted that many children worldwide have access to open fields but lack the necessary gear to play. "I realized this is a really big issue," Gumruk said.
Gumruk recruits local partners in each country to manage distribution. These partners, often relatives or family friends, ensure the equipment reaches children who need it most. His brother Omer, a freshman at the same high school, now assists with the operation. The two brothers play for MLS Next, an elite national league associated with Major League Soccer.
Gumruk began playing soccer at age five and has remained passionate about the sport. He views the activity as a tool for building self-confidence and teamwork. "I love it a lot. I have a lot of passion for it," he said. He believes the sport creates a sense of belonging where youths feel seen and valued. Donations for Soccer-4-All are accepted online.
The initiative operates independently of the school system. It relies on direct shipping and local verification for delivery. The brothers coordinate the logistics from their home in Annandale. The program has expanded from a single senior's project to a coordinated effort involving two students and international partners.
