Israel has intensified airstrikes on Gaza in recent weeks, citing renewed Hamas activity, though the militant group disputes the claim. On Sunday, two separate Israeli strikes killed at least eight Palestinians in the territory.

Medics in Gaza City reported three deaths from a single airstrike. The Hamas-run interior ministry stated that five police officers were killed in a different attack in western Khan Younis, located in the southern part of the enclave.

The Israeli military confirmed it targeted several militants in Khan Younis but provided no further details. It did not immediately comment on the strike in Gaza City.

Israel argues that Hamas is rearming and launching attacks in violation of a ceasefire established one year ago. Hamas denies it is rebuilding its arsenal or planning attacks, accusing Israel of weakening the peace agreement.

The US-brokered ceasefire includes plans for eventual reconstruction, but progress has stalled. Negotiators have not agreed on terms for Hamas disarmament or an Israeli troop withdrawal. Israeli forces currently control approximately two-thirds of the territory, where residents have been ordered to leave.

More than 2 million residents remain in the remaining third of the enclave, living primarily in makeshift tents and damaged buildings under Hamas control. Health officials in Gaza say at least 1,500 Palestinians have died in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire began. Israel reports four soldier deaths. Palestinian authorities state that more than 74,000 people have been killed in the broader conflict that started after the October 7, 2023, attack.
