London committed an additional £10 billion to Ukraine on Tuesday, a move that splits the capital between long-term economic aid and immediate military supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the terms after a phone call with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

The new package includes £7 billion in economic support to be distributed over the next three years. The remaining £3 billion is designated for British export support, a channel Zelenskyy specified will primarily fund the supply of weapons to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities. This injection sits on top of the annual financial assistance Britain already provides to Kyiv.

Zelenskyy characterized the decision as timely, arguing it signals to Moscow that Ukraine is not isolated. He stated that every step to strengthen the country pressures Russia to end what he called a war of its own making. The leaders also reviewed sanctions against Moscow, with Zelenskyy noting that the UK remains firm on its restrictive measures.

The timing aligns with urgent requests from European institutions to bridge a major fiscal gap. The European Commission confirmed that Ukraine faces a €70 billion budget shortfall in 2027. On October 15 and 16, European Council leaders tasked the Commission with preparing proposals to cover that deficit, having appealed to partners like the UK, Canada, and Norway for additional funding.

The UK's contribution addresses a portion of that looming structural hole while supporting current operational needs. The financial arrangement relies on a multi-year timeline for the economic component, while the export support provides a more immediate flow of resources for defense procurement.
