Two candidates are competing to fill the U.S. Senate seat in Illinois that opens up in January when Dick Durbin retires.

Democratic Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton and former Illinois Republican Party chair Don Tracy are the main contenders in this race. Stratton has served as lieutenant governor since 2019 and received the endorsement of Governor JB Pritzker. Tracy served as the state party chair from 2021 to 2024 before securing the Republican nomination. The outcome will influence the balance of power in the Senate as both parties fight for control.

Both candidates agree that high prices are the primary concern for voters, but they point to different culprits. Stratton cited the cost of gas, health care, utilities, and groceries in a recent interview. Her proposed solutions include stricter industry regulations, higher wages, and expanded access to affordable health care. Tracy, however, blames the Biden administration and Illinois state Democrats for lingering inflation. He described Illinois as a high-cost state where families are still hurting from previous economic policies.

The candidates also disagree on how to handle the federal judiciary. Tracy opposes expanding the Supreme Court or adding term limits for justices. He stated that the current system works well enough, though he noted it is already too political. Stratton takes a more open approach, arguing that all options for changing the court should be considered.

Immigration policy remains another area of sharp division. Stratton supports abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. She said the federal government needs to rethink how it enforces immigration laws because ICE currently terrorizes communities. Tracy dismissed this idea, comparing the abolition of ICE to an open borders policy. He argued that getting rid of the agency means abolishing interior immigration law enforcement entirely.

The campaign has also featured sparring over other political figures. Stratton recently criticized Representative Haley Stevens for endorsing Mike Rogers in Michigan. She called the move a betrayal of voters and democracy on social media. Tracy responded by saying Stratton declared war on mainstream Americans. He warned that Illinois has never had a senator as extreme as Stratton and that families would pay the price if she wins.
